History

Organic ginger essential oil has a rich history that spans thousands of years and crosses multiple continents. From its ancient use in India and China to its spread through trade routes to the Mediterranean and Europe, ginger has been a valued spice and medicinal plant. Its cultivation in the Caribbean during the colonial era further solidified its place in global trade. Today, organic ginger essential oil is celebrated for its therapeutic benefits, culinary uses, and aromatic qualities, continuing its legacy as a versatile and treasured natural product.

Ancient Origins:

  • Early Use in India and China: Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a long history dating back over 5,000 years. It originated in Southeast Asia and was extensively used in ancient India and China. These cultures valued ginger for its medicinal properties, culinary uses, and its ability to add flavor and warmth to dishes.
  • Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine: In Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India, ginger has been used to treat a variety of ailments such as digestive issues, colds, and arthritis. Similarly, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ginger was utilized to improve digestion, boost energy (Qi), and alleviate respiratory conditions.

Spread Through Trade:

  • Silk Road and Maritime Routes: Ginger spread from Southeast Asia to the Middle East and Europe through ancient trade routes such as the Silk Road and maritime routes. Arab traders played a crucial role in introducing ginger to the Mediterranean region.
  • Roman Empire: During the Roman Empire, ginger was a highly prized spice and was used in both cooking and medicine. The Romans imported large quantities of ginger, and it became a staple in Roman cuisine and pharmacology.

Medieval Europe:

  • Medicinal and Culinary Uses: In medieval Europe, ginger continued to be used for its medicinal properties, particularly for digestive health and to ward off infections. It was also a popular ingredient in medieval cookery, often used to add flavour to meats and sweets.
  • Gingerbread: The tradition of gingerbread, a sweet treat flavoured with ginger, dates back to the medieval period. It was particularly popular during festive seasons and remains a beloved treat today.

Colonial Expansion:

  • Cultivation in the Caribbean: During the colonial era, European powers established ginger plantations in the Caribbean. Jamaica, in particular, became a major centre for ginger production. The warm climate and fertile soil provided ideal conditions for growing high-quality ginger.
  • Widespread Use: By the 16th and 17th centuries, ginger was widely available in Europe and the Americas. It was used in a variety of culinary dishes, beverages (such as ginger beer and ginger ale), and medicinal remedies.

Modern Production:

  • Organic Farming Movement: In recent decades, the organic farming movement has emphasized the importance of growing ginger without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Organic ginger essential oil is derived from ginger roots cultivated under organic farming practices, ensuring a pure and natural product.
  • Distillation Process: The production of ginger essential oil involves steam distillation of the rhizomes (roots). This process extracts the aromatic compounds, resulting in a concentrated essential oil with a potent aroma and therapeutic properties.

Contemporary Uses:

  • Aromatherapy: Today, organic ginger essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy for its invigorating and warming effects. It is valued for its ability to relieve stress, enhance concentration, and promote a sense of well-being.
  • Holistic Health: The oil is also used in holistic health practices to support digestion, improve circulation, and alleviate muscle and joint pain.
  • Skincare and Perfumery: Organic ginger essential oil is an ingredient in natural skincare products and perfumes, appreciated for its spicy, warm scent and its benefits for skin health.
  • Culinary Applications: While primarily known as a culinary spice, ginger essential oil is occasionally used in natural flavourings and extracts to impart its distinctive ginger flavour to foods and beverages.

Usage

This pure essential oil is undiluted, unadulterated and created just for you. It can be used in your diffuser (3-5 drops, depending on diffuser size, for whole water capacity), in your skincare, applied directly on the skin (patch test first), 15 drops per 100ml with good filtered water to make a mist or as you please. It is very effective with the tunnelling method or for an instant energy change.

When we diffuse an essential oil, we passively ingest the molecules in the air. As they enter our bloodstream, we are benefitting from the intelligence and healing properties of the oil.

Close lid tightly during uses. If you are using your product with the pipette on frequent usage, ensure the pipette is empty when placing back into your product. It is best to store your pipette separately if not in frequent use. This will prevent your pipette from degenerating and your oil evaporating. It is advisable to patch test product before use. Keep out of direct reach from children. Store in a cool dry place. Take necessary precautions when using other medicines.

A 100% pure essential oil wouldn’t typically be used on an oil burner as its medicinal healing benefits will burn off. We would use a fragrance oil on an oil burner as it blooms with heat and evokes the sensory organs for you to respond and feel a certain way. They can be found
